Each year in late January/early February an initial list of runners are announced for the Aintree Grand National and it is not unusual for 100-120 runners to be announced. The weights for the runners are announced a few weeks later and the list of runners is reduced during the first and second forfeit stages in late February and early March. The list of runners for the Aintree Grand National is further reduced at the 5 day stage (5 days before the race) and the final list of up to 40 runners for the Aintree Grand National is announced at the final declaration stage 2 days before the race.
